I have been tasked with networking a small office (5PC's). I was thinking of going with an NT server with the PC's using WFW, cost being a primary consideration. 90% of the net use will be peer to peer, i.e. sharing files, printers. There will be one DOS application residing on the server used by everyone. The only glitch so far is that my clinent wishes to have two dumb terminals hooked up to the network and I have never done this before. I was aIso asked if there is a way to provide all usere access to a fax/modem on the server while maintaining a stand alone fax machine on the same phone line. Ihave a few questions if someone is willing to assist. 1) Can a dumb terminal/keyboard be used on an NT network using NetBeui protocol? 2) What hardware/software is required to tie in the terminal/keyboard to the network? 3) Who offers reasonably priced terminals these days? 4) In reguards to the fax situation. Is there a software or hardware solution to the problem of two devices using the same phone line? Any assistance would be grately appreciated. If you have any documents which may help me you can E-Mail them. Again, thank you. Mike R. Washington, U.S.A. E-Mail: mrush@olympic.net

Some years ago a spec was publicshed for a "PC-Term" that was a dumb terminal that acted like a PC keyboard and EGA screen, but hooked up via a serial port. They were specialised devices.Zentec (Santa Clara and Tallahassee) made one, known as "Genisys" with colour support. LINK tecjnolelogies (Fremont) mad a monochrome one. Also, some communication board manufacturers (e.g. Digiboard) had hardware interfaces that permitted these devices to "talk" to a PC. They were used mainly as "virtual" terminals on 386 class machines taking advantage of the VM facilities of the 386 to multi-taks. The software came from several vendors, notably IGC and Alloy, amongst others. There is a company in Boca Raton Citrix that did a multi-user OS/2 and are rumoured to be doing a multi-user NT. You would probably need their software. I do not know what types of terminals your client has -- if you let me know I can probably tell you their capabilities. If they are IBM 327x series, forget it -- they hook up totally differently As far as the fax situation goes, there are several vendors of fax server software (e.g. Delrina). Each fax machine will need its own line, or a switch of some sort. I do not use a fax machine myself -- just a fax cards, software and a scanner for imported documents. The big plus to this is that I simply trahs junk faxes without pritning them, and I can use my laser printer for those I want. Jonathan (I have been there before) Waters

Dumb terminals cannot be used for an NT network.

For instance, start RAS server when I forgot it before leave my office......;-) For this, I use Ataman telnetd server. -- ************************************ Louis POTY louisp@sdv.fr SdV Plurimedia in Strasbourg, FRANCE

Have a look at http://www.citrix.com/ You can find some information about application server information.
