Can anyone out there tell me the specifications for FDDI over multimode 62.5/125 micron fiber optic cable? I will have 4,000+ ft of cable installed to extend our Ethernet (FOIRL or 10Base-F) and want to insure that this cable can later be used for FDDI. I would expect to have to install new connectors for FDDI. What specifications (maximum attenuation, etc) would I give to a contractor to insure that both the cable and installation are up to specs? Thanks, Barry Blackburn, Network Administrator at Sonoma State University blackbub@sonoma.edu 1801 E. Cotati Ave. Rohnert Park, CA 94928 (707) 664-9180

If you choose connectors carefully, you may be able to avoid changing them later -- pick one for which there are patch cords going both to your current Ethernet equipment, and to the FDDI connector type. ST may be a good choice, but check what type of patch cords are available. The relevant standard is the ANSI PMD standard, X3.166. paul !----------------------------------------------------------------------- ! Paul Koning, NI1D, A-13683 !
