From time to time, people have requested performance characterizations
for Digital's high-end packet switch, called GIGAswitch(tm). A preprint
of an article on that subject is now available by anonymous FTP.
Here is the abstract file; please excuse any "commercial" language.
Please follow up in comp.dcom.lans.fddi only.

The GIGAswitch System: A High-Performance Packet Switching Platform

The GIGAswitch(tm) System is a very high-performance packet-
	switching platform built on a 36-port 100 Mbit/second crossbar
switching fabric capable of 6.25 million connections/second.
The GIGAswitch System platform is data link independent.
The first GIGAswitch System product offering uses 2-port FDDI
line cards to construct a 22-port IEEE 802.1d FDDI bridge.
A 4-port FDDI line card is under development, as is a
multifunction 2-port line card providing SONET STS-3c
	(155 Mbits/sec), T3 (45 Mbits/sec) and/or E3 (34 Mbits/sec)
using ATM. Distributed forwarding, in hardware, yields
forwarding rates greater than 200,000 packets per second per
port. In this paper, we present an overview of the switch
architecture and discuss the principles influencing its design.
We then describe the implementation of an FDDI bridge on the
GIGAswitch System platform and conclude with the results of
performance measurements made during system test.
