FDDI/Ethernet Comparisons

Sorry if this is an FAQ.

In what situations does FDDI improve my life (response-time-wise)
over Ethernet? Would Ethernet switching provide most of what
FDDI provides in response for less cost?

I am looking for responses more detailed than 100Mb > 10Mb.

Thanks.

FDDI is better than Ethernet for the following reasons:

1. FDDI has built in redundancy features because of the dual ring topology.
2. FDDI has greater distance limitations - 2 KM for stations on the ring
   vs. 300 Meters for Ethernet.
3. FDDI provides thruput of 100 Mbps vs. 10 Mbps for Ethernet.

I probably shouldn't say this, given the source of the butter on my
bread. The "built in redundancy features" of FDDI are needed, and in
no way extra.

FDDI is not now and probably never will be nearly as reliable or robust
in the face of real world hazards as 10MHz ethernet. FDDI starts with
a ring instead of a bus, and works down from there.

FDDI may be more reliable than IBM token ring, because of the dual
ring. I don't know.

That FDDI is less reliable is not bad. Ethernet is in general less
reliable and robust than simple RS-232.

Speed is not free.
