We have a large geopgraphic LAN site (25 sq.km) with some 3000 devices in our
network( incl. Mainframes. minis, PC's PLCs, terminals etc.). We are currently
using broadband technology, but realise that this
is losing market and vendor support.

Firstly we need to analyse our network needs. We are currently determining what
services are required. However we need techniques, rules of thumb , tools etc.
to put paramters and dimensions that would help us decide on appropriate
technologies and topologies etc. We have come up with some N squared matrix
and other ways of quantifying this but I would like to hear from others
with large campus networks that may have had similar experience in analysing
their networking needs.

It is obvious that fibre optic technology is going to be the way to go.
Is there any information, reviews, critiques, etc on technologies such as ATM
and FDDI?

Your help would be appreciated.
