Speaking from Fremont, CA -
Flaky is the word. Half the time @home cable performance is fine.
The other half, I get better performance on a 56K phone modem from
a local carrier (jps).
The half of the time @home is bad, it is so bad that it takes
say 30 seconds to get your e-mail, even if there is no new e-mail.
I figure these e-mail delays cannot be charged to Internet delays.
*Customer Support Not*
A year ago, you could get customer support in say 15 minutes,
now, waits of 1 hour are common.
E-mail requests seem to get lost somewhere.
This week end was bad. Service died Friday night (not uncommon)
but was not up Saturday morning. I called customer support,
Fremont was not on the sick list. So I thought my modem may have
died - it kept playing a light show - and stayed on the line.
I played Minesweeper for 75 minutes, while listening to the
background saying
- "your call is very important to us" - sure, you hire
so few phone service people that most customers give up.
- "you may contact us by e-mail ..." - sure, when @home
works I will be able to e-mail again
After 75 minutes I had a good head of steam, and an operator
came on. I told the operator that I wanted to have @home
forward my e-mail to a different address - they would not
do it. After that things got tense! I talked with a supervisor
who said forwarding e-mail was not technically possible - HAHA
Just then the cable modem synchronized - and @home performance
has been good for the past 48 hours. (Maybe many customers
have given up trying!)
