I'm guessing that most problems are caused by using >out-of-spec parts. At my previous job (about four years ago) I became responsible for the network after the last competent Sys Admin quit. Even though I had segmented the five+ year old thinnet network into lots of short, manageable segments, having a piece of it go down was a weekly occurance. Most of the problems were due to old T-connectors that had become loose. By just pushing on a T where it connected to a transceiver you could make the whole segment go down. I wasted a lot of time figuring this out. I did a lot of binary searches locating bad connectors. When you figure a half-dozen $100K+/year engineers aren't getting anything done when the network is down, it was pretty easy to convince the Exec VP of the company to pop for $6k to pull four-six runs of Cat-5 to each office, plus install, hubs, and new transceivers when we moved into new office space. With Cat 5 twisted pair you can easily migrate to 100BASE-T, full-duplex, switched Ethernet, FDDI over copper, 155Mbps ATM, etc. -Jonathan jhue@geocities.com
