I'm guessing that most problems are caused by using >out-of-spec parts. I've run a small 3/4 node network at home on thin-wire for several years. I've had two NIC failures (both 3C509-Combo's) and no other problems. I've also moved twice during that period. I have no reason to think that the NIC failures would NOT have occurred with CAT-5 and a hub. OTOH, I have also worked at a larger industrial installation with several hundred nodes on thin-wire. That was a disaster. IMO, thin-wire *can* work well for small networks. I wouldn't use if for more than a few nodes - troubleshooting is just too troublesome. -- |~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| | Malcolm Hoar "The more I practice, the luckier I get". | | malch@malch.com Gary Player. | | http://www.malch.com/ Shpx gur PQN. | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
