As others have noted you should use plenum (air moving) rated cable
in any air moving (plenum) space.

You might want to look into using existing phone wire in the house,
check out "www.tutsys.com"'s HomeRun (1.3Mb/s I think) to piggy back on
inuse POTS lines. Or their XL600's (10Mb/s I've used these they are
slick!!) to use extra (not otherwise in use) wire (1-pair) ... if there
is wire that already goes where you want.

You might find more/better info/advice in the "comp.dcom.cabling" ng.
I seem to recall some talk about getting into the attic space and
dropping wire down inside the walls and then down next to vent pipes
or though open areas to the basement/crawl space (out of luck with
pad/slab homes) to get into first floor areas. You finish off the
connections with RJ-45 wall plates (doesn't look any worse than phone
jacks), you could possible double up with existing jacks. Run the wires
to some central place and connect with a hub or switch.

Good luck,
Paul
