This is something many people here don't understand. Those of us who prefer to manage our own computers and handle our own settings are a SMALL minority. The vast majority of users think a DHCP server is a waiter at the Department of Housing and Consumer Products cafeteria and get all confused when you ask them to do complex things like "right click". > I understand a lot of High Speed Internet users are > more knowledgeable (your assumptions are not most users) than that and > I am happy for them but believe me their is a whole chunk of > subscribers that readly and freely admit they know nothing about this > computer and just want their internet back!! I hear it everyday. I got an email from a woman in my church who is also an @home user last week who said that she no longer had web access. She also copied a half-dozen other church members (also @home users) From her description it was clear she just didn't know how to do anything without that "excite@home" start page. I replied to her and the other people she sent the letter to and explained how to get to the new cox.net site and make it her default page. I got FOUR responses thanking me for the help becuse none of the four could figure it out and all thought that they had lost web access after the Excite portal closed down. These are NOT stupid people . . . every one of them has a college degree . . . they just aren't computer people. > No doubt the CD can be hacked. Once again, I think you can do it at http://support.cox.net/migration/jsp/migrate.jsp > I am not sure you can because the software is going > to send all the necessary info to COX directly. Like I said before > their is nothing saying you can't uninstall the software 5 minutes > after the regestriation process has been done! My problem as a power user is that ISP software also tends to do little things to network settings that can be painful to reestablish, and I am one of those folks who insists on knowing exactly what changes are being made to my machine. If it turns out that the CD is a requirement I'll throw a spare hard drive in my machine, do a defalut installation of Windows on it, then put my real drive back in. Thanks for the info though.
