CABLE INTERNET ACCESS AND RURAL COMMUNITIES

There's a story on MACWEEK about high-speed internet access via cable and
DSL, at:

http://macweek.zdnet.com/2000/08/13/0817dslreaders.html

-----------------------------

This story reminded me of an e-mail dialogue I had with a friend just before
New Year's regarding how cable access affected a rural community. Here's an
excerpt:

I saw a TV news story recently that showed a town in Kentucky that bought
out the local cable TV company and then began providing cable Internet
access to the town's citizens at cost. Apparently, it is having a huge
impact on the schools, business, and community life in general because most
of the town is online. It was an excellent story about how high-speed
access to information by the majority of the townspeople promoted better
education, business growth and expansion, and community ties. I wish I
would have taped it.

If we were to get cable access to the Internet, I would jump on it in a
heartbeat.

The author later revealed that the story may have been on a C/Net TV show,
but he wasn't sure.

Does anyone know anything about this?
