In the long right, it might be the best thing available. DSL is no panacea either. I have been told that Ameritech will not install DSL to any homes that are farther than 18,000 ft from the CO. This limits DSL dramatically. This is line length and not as-the-crow-flies. I live closer than 18,000 ft from my CO (if there weren't any trees, I could see the building with binocs), but Ameritech insists I am farther in "cable ft". The current DSL systems sold by the ISPs are handled by Northpoint. The service is indeed faster than modems, but it's very costly. It peaks just where ADSL starts (1.5Mbs). Ameritech is in no hurry to offer fast, fast service either. They aren't about to cut into their revenues they get from all the T's they install. ISDN is probably what we will see for at least the next 18 months.
