I've connected via DOCSIS cable modem (one GI, one Samsung) using Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 (Server, Advanced and Professional, beta 3 and RC1), Linux (Red Hat, SuSE, Caldera and other 2.2.x-based distributions) and BeOS 4.5. No problems; they just worked, and all on the first try. I can use either DHCP or a static IP. Multiple systems, multiple network cards. I switch PCs using the same IP (different MACs, obviously) all the time, to swap a desktop for a laptop, for instance. Your MAC address doesn't change when you switch operating systems on the same PC. The MAC is burned into the ROM on your network card(s). Another poster accused @Home of filtering out Windows NT MACs. @Home's equipment cannot discern a Windows NT system from a Macintosh, so how (or, more importantly, why?) would @Home single out a Windows NT system's MAC to refuse it service? All @Home sees is TCP/IP packets. They could be generated by a Cray for all @Home cares. Lots of @Home users run Windows NT. NT Workstation 4.0 is bundled with many small-office systems and notebooks. If your cable modem doesn't hold sync, your speed is lousy or your packets aren't routed properly, then you're right to call your provider and demand your service be fixed. If they don't fix it, then you have a legitimate gripe. If you are able to route from one machine but not another, you need to get some knowledge before you proclaim your provider sucks.
