I've got a Linksys 4 port router sharing my AT&T Broadband connection
between 2 computers. One computer is running Windows XP and the other
Windows 2000. I keep having this intermittent problem on the XP
computer only. I lose my connection to the internet, or rather the XP
computer loses its ability to resolve DNS.
When the connection drops and I try to ping an address I get the
following:
***************
C:\>ping www.yahoo.com
Ping request could not find host www.yahoo.com. Please check the name
and try again.
***************
If I ping the address itself - no problem!
***************
C:\>ping 64.58.76.178
Pinging 64.58.76.178 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 64.58.76.178: bytes=32 time=56ms TTL=242
Reply from 64.58.76.178: bytes=32 time=44ms TTL=242
Reply from 64.58.76.178: bytes=32 time=44ms TTL=242
Reply from 64.58.76.178: bytes=32 time=44ms TTL=242
Ping statistics for 64.58.76.178:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 44ms, Maximum = 56ms, Average = 47ms
***************
All the while, the Windows 2000 computer can surf without a problem, I
can ping my router, my modem, and the other computer on the network.
I can also ping both the IP and the computer name of the other
computer. In order to correct the problem, any of the following works:
1) Reboot
2) Ipconfig /release - followed by - ipconfig /renew
3) Simply right clicking on the network connection and selecting
"repair"
Anybody else having this problem? Anybody know how to resolve it? All
info welcome!
Thanks,
Sammy

Have you downloaded all the patches / applied all the updates for XP? My ISP (http://powerlink.adelphia.net/) states that XP has some connectivity problems that are fixed with the updates. All updated have been applied. Another thing I just noticed. When I do a bandwidth speedtest ( http://www.bandwidthplace.com ). The Win2k computer always measures at about twice the speed - seriously! WinXP - 700-900 kilobits per second Win2k - 1.9 megabits per second The Win2k computer is noticeably a lot faster on everything. What's going on? I am in the same boat myself. All patches applied. I can surf to 6 or 7 sites and then all of a sudden I get DNS errors for any other sites I want to visit. Reboot fixes this most times until I surf another few sites. "Sammy" <sam@yahoo.com> wrote in message news:l5eu1ukuvbcfvvm2q8q406pao4dauhpaqr@4ax.com... > > All updated have been applied. try forcing an entry for your dns on tcp/ip properties resolve ns1.attibi.com, they have about 5-6 with that naming convention, ie ns2, ns3 you will get diff latency, chose the best for you, but this totally fixed this problem for me now if i could just get mIRC, AOL IM, yahoo im, ICQ and my FTP server all running without killing my connection........id be really happy "Sammy" <sam@yahoo.com> wrote in message news:kfht1us8dm57c745jnbi2hbmq5mlicsqkr@4ax.com... > I've got a Linksys 4 port router sharing my AT&T Broadband connection > between 2 computers. I'm running XP Pro on Pipeline now and it works great since I patched it from Speedguide. It was not all that fast until I applied the patch. I had tweaked ME and it was cooking, but the upgrade to XP put everything back to default and the registry is a lot different than earlier versions of Windows.
