USENET is most definitely NOT a major waste of bandwidth. Our usenet
feeds takes 250MB a day or so. This is *nothing* compared to the
4 GB / day that gets dished out of our WWW server, most of that
    repetitive.

If a person posts something to alt.sex.whatever in a newsgroup, it
takes maybe a couple hundred K in network bandwidth on a one-time
basis. If someone makes the same material available via WWW, it takes
a couple hundred MEGs a *day*, for weeks on end if I don't catch it.

Of course, I am not advocating that everyone post their WWW page to a
newsgroup whenever it changes... there is a definite place for the WWW.

Big mailing lists are almost as bad, where each message must be
transmitted to each recipient. A huge waste of bandwidth and a huge
wate of overhead that digests only partially fix.

USENET NEWS scales much more favorably then anything else when it comes
to mass distribution. Thus, there is also a definite place for
the USENET in the scheme of things.
