: Ms. Mouse, you should really find out the difference between "opinion"
: and "telling facts". I stated the fact that CID is spoofable; Jay
: stated the "fact" that it was nonspoofable.
Now, now, Ron... let's be accurate: I stated that it couldn't be
spoofed at the casual subscriber level in the fashion people were
asserting. I _never_ asserted that there was _no_ way to spoof it, and
in fact, in at least one of my posts, I noted that there were a couple
of specific, if difficult, approaches to the problem.
: Now I backed up my
: fact-telling with empirical evidenece while Jay gave us the
: theoretical reasons why it's not spoofable. His theory didn't take
: into account that the phone company may be the one to do the spoofing
: for us, or the cellular company. As is done in practice.
See above. :-)
And in the case of cellco's, it usually ignorance or stupidity that
gives you the wrong number. It's also worth noting that even when a
cellco screws this up, _the number you get is *still* accurate, it's
just not what you expect._
This isn't really spoofing. Spoofing is "I'm Jay, and I want it to
look likr Bill is placing these threatening phone calls, so I'll put
his phone number on their box instead of mine".
: So combining our wits we can trace back how a telemarketer may produce
: a fake (and even a nonexistant) tel # to show up on people's Caller ID
: boxes.
: He calls himself collect using Oncor: He punches-in the 10-digit
: "originating" number of his choice, then he punches-in the destination
: number (which is his own cellular #). Within seconds, his cell phone
: rings, and the "originating" # he just punched-in shows up on his
: Caller ID (if he has it on his cellphone). He doesn't even have to
: answer the cell phone...
If what she asserts is happeninga, actually is... and if it _is_, one
call to their chief engineer ought to clear it up. The FCC takes a dim
view.
: Now, according to Ms. Mouse, anybody he calls using his cellphone will
: think the calls are coming from the faked-number ("originating" #
: above).
: And that's how it *can* be done (in BellAtlantic-served areas).
: Probably one of SEVERAL ways, too.
See above, again. :-)
: So everything is possible. Even getting "PRIVATE" callers (*67ers) is
: possible with a little creativity...
Getting the ID of a call marked private? Yeah, subvert the switch.
Cheers,
