I am currently sifting through a lot of useless information to try and
piece together an archive of University technical reports (abstracts
and title lists). If you have any lists or abstracts of University
techreports (or other Research type papers) I would love to hear from
you.

What I have done so far is now available for searching with WAIS. The
wais sources are:

1) The archive sites list (regular posting to comp.doc.techreports):

(:source
   :version 3
   :ip-address "130.194.224.201"
   :ip-name "daneel.rdt.monash.edu.au"
   :tcp-port 210
   :database-name "computer-techreports-index"
   :cost 0.00
   :cost-unit :free
   :maintainer "rik.harris@fcit.monash.edu.au"
:description "Server created with WAIS release 8 b3.1 on Mar 11 17:41:58 1992 by wais@daneel.rdt.monash.edu.au

This is a list of about 130 archive sites that maintain computer science
(and similar) technical reports, for public consumption. This list is
regularly posted in comp.doc.techreports
"
)

2) The titles and authors database (soon to be abstracts):

(:source
   :version 3
   :ip-address "130.194.224.201"
   :ip-name "daneel.rdt.monash.edu.au"
   :tcp-port 210
   :database-name "computer-techreports"
   :cost 0.00
   :cost-unit :free
   :maintainer "wais@daneel.rdt.monash.edu.au"
:description "Server created with WAIS release 8 b3.1 on Mar 11 15:11:53 1992 by wais@daneel.rdt.monash.edu.au

This is a database of titles, and authors of approximately 2700
techreports, preprints, reprints, technical notes, and papers from
Universities and research institutes from around the world. Now
contains over 780 abstracts from technical reports. This data is
available by anonymous ftp (login=anonymous, passwd=email address) from
daneel.rdt.monash.edu.au:pub/techreports. Any queries, questions, etc
to rik.harris@fcit.monash.edu.au, or wais@rdt.monash.edu.au.
"
)

3) A great (and large) list of computer-related journal articles from
Joel Seiferas at Rochester:

(:source
   :version 3
   :ip-address "130.194.224.201"
   :ip-name "daneel.rdt.monash.edu.au"
   :tcp-port 210
   :database-name "computer-papers-list"
   :cost 0.00
   :cost-unit :free
   :maintainer "rik.harris@fcit.monash.edu.au"
:description "Server created with WAIS release 8 b3.1 on Oct 19 22:50:29 1991 by rik@daneel.rdt.monash.edu.au

This database contains a list of journal article titles and authors from
many computing journals. The journals codes and names are also in this
database, so you can find (for example) the name of the journal with
the code ACTAINF means, by searching the database for 'acatainf'.
both the papers list and the journals list are available for ftp from
cayuga.cs.rochester.edu:pub (where they originally came from), and from
daneel.rdt.monash.edu.au:pub/techreports/papers (where I am).
"
)

I have available a part of the archive I am currently working on. To
access this, anonymous ftp to daneel.rdt.monash.edu.au, in the directory
pub/techreports. Any comments, questions, etc to me
(me = rik.harris@fcit.monash.edu.au).

The format is as follows:

%AU Author. If multiple author's, use multiple %AU's.
%TI Title.
%RT Report Type (eg Master's Thesis).
%LT Local Title. This is ususally something like 'CS_TR_91_15'.
%OR Organisation.
%AB Abstract.
%AV Availability (if available in journals, ftp, cost, etc).
%GP Group (part of a group of papers on a similar topic).
%DA Date (prefer in %DY, %MN, %YR).
%DY Day
%MN Month
%YR Year
%PA Number of pages.
%PL Place published.
%LA Language published in
