DSP chip for motion control

I am planning to use DSP chip in motion control system.
That will be a high speed cloesed loop step motor
controller. The software should take care of commutation at
a rather high rate (several us.) as well as PID (or other
kind of filter) computation. I have seen some similar
applications using Motorola DSP56001. But I just want to
know if there are any more suitable chips for this kind of
application.
Thanks for any suggestion in advance.
