One day course: Survey of New Music and Audio Technologies, EDP24S18
Sunday, March 21, 9am-5pm.

This course covers the fundamentals and future of digital audio
acquisition, storage, editing, mixing, synthesis and signal processing
with workstations and personal computers. Leading audio and music
software packages such as Studer's MacMix and Opcode's Max, will be
demonstrated and analyzed in depth. Popular hardware platforms, such as
the Apple Macintosh and Silicon Graphics Indigo, will be demonstrated.
Industry standards such as SMPTE Time Code, AES/EBU and MIDI will be
covered together with the system design issues, vendor implementations,
and user application, of these standards.

Emerging digital audio and music technology will be surveyed by
demonstrations of software and systems from industry and academic
research. These will include advanced signal processing
algorithms for analysis/resynthesis, compression/expansion and time
dilation and contraction, 3d sound, physical modeling. Recent results
will be described on the application of audio for multimedia, neural
networks for adaptive user interfaces, networking technology for
gestural and audio communications, spectral sound synthesis methods and
high level design environments for real-time signal processing on RISC
workstations.

Students will be invited to explore in class the concepts covered using
the audio facilities of the workstations of the Sony Advanced
Presentation Center.

Instructor:
Adrian Freed, the Director of Systems and Software Development for CNMAT
(the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies) at UC Berkeley. Mr.
Freed is internationally recognized for his contributions to the
advancement of audio and music through technology. He has taken ideas
from their birth in research institutions to their application in widely
available commercial tools.
