Im looking for an editor which will ......
handle very large files
is able to do block edits in columns
works on a PC
outputs ASCII
It would also be nice if it worked under MS-Windows and had a fixed column
output filling gaps with blanks or zeros
Thank You in Advance

In the commercial world, Brief is available from Borland. Chris

It has very nice column editing features and outputs ASCII. The latest version, 5.0, works in DOS or OS2 and uses extended memory. (I don't have this version.) They are working on a Windows version. You can set record type to fixed, with a specified record length in order to pad records with blanks. A global change would change all blanks to 0. The column editing features are of two forms; you can highlight a column block and then copy, move, delete, fill or overlay that block with alt-keystroke commands (alt-c to copy, alt-m to move, etc.). Also, you can set a column-delimited zone, after which all of the command-line commands will affect only the columns within the zone. This allows you to create complex macros (which can be bound to a key) to do virtually unlimited column editing. Since I have a version that's several releases out-of-date, I suggest you call the developer if you have questions, instead of asking me: Mansfield Software Group (203) 429-8402 I call them every so often and ask if they have plans to develop a Unix version, but so far the answer is "No". None of the Unix editors I've seen has the column editing power of Kedit; it's ideal for working with data and also for turning ugly output into something close to printable, so that TeX or a word-processor can easily handle the rest. XyWrite IV is particularly nice about columns.

If you are creating the file from scratch you can build tables with the column widths you want, then move around in it like a spreadsheet. You can also get the spacing you want with tab settings and/or column modes, where it might be easier to do moves of arbitrary rectangles. Les Mikesell les@chinet.chi.il.us

Xedit is a line- based (like Kedit) editor with extensive integrations with IBM's REXX programming language. Much as I like unix, emacs and even vi ;-), I've got to admit that IBM scored some mighty impressive points with that editor. Now WordPerfect doesn't really output ASCII, now does it?
Perhaps by using a hack: printing through a stripped down printer
driver with only ASCII characters and without control codes.
But there are better editors that are easier to use than by using this setup.
What about Brief, Epsilon, BOXER (shareware, but I am not sure it can
arbitrary large files), BINGO (also shareware), Elvis (vi clone for PC,
very good, free), VIM (vi clone, very good, for PC, also free).
Richard.

Sure, if you hit <ctl-F5> (dos text) and save. You do have to be careful not to save to the same filename as you exit from WP (it will be remembered as the default choice). >Perhaps by using a hack: printing through a stripped down printer >driver with only ASCII characters and without control codes. That works too, and either method can be automated easily with a macro. Of course you lose the concept of tables, tabstops, column setups, etc., in the ASCII copy, so if you anticipate additional editing you will also want to save a copy in native WP format under a different filename. >But there are better editors that are easier to use than by using this setup. >What about Brief, Epsilon, BOXER (shareware, but I am not sure it can >arbitrary large files), BINGO (also shareware), Elvis (vi clone for PC, >very good, free), VIM (vi clone, very good, for PC, also free). "Better" depends on what you like and what you really need to do. If you need to work in tables, you probably won't find anything better than Wordperfect, especially if you need to import data from a spreadsheet into a document in table format, since that's a built-in operation. Elvis is the only one of the editors mentioned above that I've used and I'm sure it's no match for WP 5.1 for anything resembling columnar output. If you need to output "pretty" hard copy (i.e. with proportional fonts and borders around your tables) as well as exporting ASCII, you'll quickly learn to appreciate the high end wordprocessors. Yes, it does. F10, then one of the options shown (Save DOS text, I think). However, WP column editing ability is strictly limited to columns you've predefined before setting up the data file. And moving between columns is a pain. Barbara Vaughan

And, of course, you define a column dynamically, simply by marking the top-left and bottom-right corners. Jerry Smith Iris Computing Laboratories The Spectro Group, Inc. From article <C17Ey4.DCs@compsci.liverpool.ac.uk>, by chris47@uxb.liv.ac.uk (Chris Brown ): As you said... > Im looking for an editor which will ...... > handle very large files > is able to do block edits in columns > works on a PC > outputs ASCII > > It would also be nice if it worked under MS-Windows and had a fixed column > output filling gaps with blanks or zeros > > Thank You in Advance > > Chris > chris47@uxb.liv.ac.uk The editor I would recommend is Solution System's Brief - it is simply the best programming editor I have come across, and even if it does not do a particular function you require, you can define a macro to do it for you. Maximum file length is 32Mb, and it handles column blocks with ease. Check it out. David Joyce.

No way they will be usable in DOS text format for other programs.
