Is it possible to use the map command to remap the space bar? If so, what's the right syntax. Things like ^V<space> won't do the job. Michael

Yes it will, just use more ^V's.
Type this: :map ^V^V^V ^V^F
See this: :map ^V ^F
[NOTE: This is untested, but it seems to work]
You may or may not have troubble with the ~ command.

Things like ^V<space> won't do the job. In the version I use, SVR3.1, it is possible, and takes *two* ^Vs. Unfortunately, a number of other command is implemented as if they were mapped to a combination using space, e.g. `s' is mapped to `c '. Mapping the space bar messes up `s' and other commands. It would have been nice if the author of vi had used `l' instead. It would have been even nicer if user-level maps didn't disturb the builtin ones, of course. While we're at it, two years ago Chris Torek posted an article in this group in which he mentioned that one should not map any of "ailru\_ $". I can understand most of these, but I have two questions: (1) What does `\' do? (2) Which command do I mess up when I map `u'? -- HansM

Things like ^V<space> won't do the job. You may end up very sorry, because some built-in mappings (like s and ~) depend on the space bar's meaning "move one character to the right," but if you want to try anyway, type TWO ctrl-V's so that there is a hard ^V saved in the map command: "type ctrl-V ctrl-V space space :map ^V whateveryouwantspacetomean Be sure to put two spaces after the hard ctrl-V: one to get quoted and one to separate the two arguments to the map command. vi may still object that it's "too dangerous to map that." If it does, give up. I have successfully (and safely) map!ped <space><space>. David W.
