Here is the summary of all those helpful individuals who answered my post
requesting information on phonetic character fonts. Many thanks to you all.
Incidently, I didn't mention which platform I was working on because we
need these for Mac and IBM both.

This is less useful than I like to be when responding to netnews queries, but
I hope it'll get you where you need to be....

There is a font called "TechPhon" which as far as I can tell is an IPA
character set. I haven't printed out the complete font sheet on it yet, so
I can't tell you for certain that it's a complete font, but it certainly
looks like that you're looking for.

Now the vague part: I don't remember where I saw it exactly. I do know for
certain that it was in one of the four or five sites listed in the
comp.lang.postscript FAQ list (probably archive.umich.edu). I have seen it
in both PostScript and TrueType formats.

I hope this gets you on the right track!

If you are looking for a IPA font for the Mac, a fairly nice one is
availalble from mac.archive.umich.edu. (Somewhere under
/mac/system.extensions/font) It is called "PALPHON" and is based upon
the font Palatino. It hasjust about every symbol you'll need. This
font is either free/ or shareware, as far as I can tell. There is
another IPA font out there called TechPhonetic, however, it lacks a
lot of characters and has no zero-offset characters (i.e. accents,
etc.) which limit its usefulnes (IMHO). I am not sure if it is
available for Windows, however,

Of course, there are also several commercial available IPA fonts
(Linguist's Software sells through some of the big catalog houses).

Best of luck finding what you need,

There a series of IPA fonts just posted on sumex-aim.stanford.edu as:
/info-mac/font/sil-ipa.hqx

Here's the blurb:

SIL-IPA.sit.hqx is a set of scalable IPA fonts containing the full
International Phonetic Alphabet with 1990 Kiel revisions. Three
typefaces are included:

  SIL Doulos (similar to Times)
  SIL Sophia (similar to Helvetica)
  SIL Manuscript (monowidth)

Each font contains all the standard IPA discrete characters and non-spacing
diacritics as well as some suprasegmental and puncuation marks. Each font
comes in both PostScript Type 1 and TrueType formats. The fonts are also
available for Microsoft Windows.

These fonts were designed by the Printing Arts Department of the Summer
Institute of Linguistics, Dallas, Texas.

I developed a phonetic font which you can get by anonymous ftp from
mac.archive.umich.edu It is called PalPhon. There are actually two
fonts: the basic PalPhon and one with additional accents and symbols
called PalPi. The package includes some documents on using the fonts
as well.

Good luck

In article <brumage.2.0@mailer.acns.fsu.edu>, you wrote asking for
sources for phonetic fonts. Someone else may already have answered
this, so sorry if I repeat. Adobe sells two packages of phonetic
fonts, Stone Phonetic (#255) and Times Phonetic (#278). These match
the Stone Serif/Stone Sans and Times Roman faces, respectively.
Each font includes about 300 IPA symbols.

Do you use TeX?
I got METAFONT sources of phonetic symbols
developed by Tokyo-Shoseki-Printing and Sanseido
at last month.
It contains all of IPA ( Internatioanl Phonetic
Alphabet).

Try techphonetic or palphon.

The first is probably the better option, but I think only works on a
computer that can perform automatic kerning. The second is two fonts
containing just about every symbol and diacritic possible. The only
problem is that diacritics appear over the preceeding letter, and while
each diacritic has three incarnations for different width letters, it
can still be difficult to get them placed accyrately over some letters.

Both fonts are available from mac.archive.umich.edu in
system.extensions/fonts/type.one.fonts (or something like that). Or
consult your local archie server.

Hope this helps.

Steffan.
