Hi all. Can anyone give me some advice on how to how to get a job in
typography / graphic design / newspaper or magazine production? I'm
graduating from college this spring with a BA in philosophy. I intend
to do PhD work in cognitive science / artificial intelligence later on,
but I want to work in publishing -- away from academia -- for a few
years first. My plan is to get an internship at a local paper or
magazine, and use that experience to get a Real Job in production
somewhere, preferably Chicago.

But now I'm wondering whether this is realistic: Will anyone consider
employing someone who has no formal education in art or design? I have
been doing and managing production on my college newspaper for a
couple of years, as well as doing other odd jobs like designing
T-shirts. Not to boast, but I think I have as good an eye for
lettering and typefaces as anyone I've met. I'm pretty competent with
the right Mac applications (etc) also.

Do I have a chance of finding a good job in design? Is there someone
reading this who has been or is in the same position? Can anyone give
me some advice? I've heard of the Poynter Institute in Florida, which
offers two-month fellowships in newspaper design . . . are there other
places like this I should know about?
