I wish to assemble a computer-based system which allows me to:

1.      Create custom fonts, freestyle, or by modifying existing font
	descriptions (the standard fonts from Letraset, Adobe, etc.
	are not suitable for large sign designs, as they do not scale
	up very well, and are too well-known);

	A good sign font must contain kerning data which depends on
	the physical size of the font plus other factors, and allows
	adjacent pairs of letters to be joined (ligatures) e.g. TT;

2.	Use such fonts to develop wysiwyg scaled-down prototypes for
	signs, on-screen and on paper;

3.      Store and distribute copies of the fonts using a typeface
	description language suitable for controlling stonecutters,
	wood routers, and vinyl cutting machines.  (I don't expect
	device drivers will be available :-)

What machines and software packages should I be looking at?  Mac with
LaserWriter?  Adobe?  NeXT?  Is anybody already doing this?
