Pioneer's 10x CD-ROM drives utilizes CAV (Constant Angular Velocity)
technology for the first time in the industry. The ultimate in CD-ROM
performance, Pioneer achieves a high speed sustained data transfer
rate and fast access time by integrating CAV rotation mode along with
CLV (Constant Linear Velocity) rotation mode in the same drive.

Current CD-ROM technology uses CLV which allows the disc to rotate at
a faster rate while reading the inner tracks and slowing as it reads
the outer tracks. With the new VLSA technology; the CD-ROM disc is
spun at a constant angular velocity providing a higher performance for
faster seek time and variable data transfer rates.

Users can switch the 10X between CAV-only and mixed CAV-CLV modes. The
former will provide an average access time of 80 milliseconds, which
is best for multimedia applications that change files frequently.
Spinning a disc at 2,100 rpm, it will have data transfer rates from
4.4x to 10.3x speeds on the inside and outside tracks of a disc,
respectively.
