In the January 1993 issue of BOARDWATCH magazine, there is an ad for Fracterm BBS front-end software. Its claim to fame is that is supports fractal image compression, and you can download and display an svga image in 10-15 seconds, as a function of the front end software. This allows you to browse GIFs visually online, and select your downloads from the images themselves, not just text descriptions. IMHO, fractal compression blows away JPEG in every aspect. Even at it's most lossy, a fractally compressed images takes on a 'water color' look. Jpeg simply gets less and less recognizable. Also, JPEG is a relatively mature (read, maxxed out) technology, whereas Fractal compression has yet to reach it's potential. One of the amazing aspects of fractal compression is that the decompression is resolution independant. A 100x100 gif can be displayed at 320x200 without pixelization (blockiness). Anyway...you can check out FRACTERM at 604-734-5800 USR DS, or voice 800-676-3111. I am in no way connected with Fracterm. Although I thought the current incarnation of Fracterm was a little lacking in functionality (as far as a BBS front end goes), I can see it's potential, and I really hope it's fractal based technology catches on. Have fun! Pete ....I do not speak for anyone!!!
