IGES (Int'l Graphics Exchange System?) files of CAD models: help

I have an IGES file of a spacecraft. If anyone has any documentation on
what the IGES file contains, specifically, or any conversion/editing programs,
I would appreciate the help. I am trying to reduce the # of polygons in
the spacecraft from around 60,000 (which my animation s/w can't handle) to
maybe 2-6,000. The IGES file numbers are all greek to me.

thanks.
regards,
ds
