Hello,

I'd like to know where to find algorithms for the following purpose. I'd
like to pass from one image to another using a visual effect(normally in
java) like fading, mosaic, crossing... Other idea are also welcome.

Thanks,

Pascal Couvreur

It's a little unclear what you want, try giving us a little more
information.

Java3D may be the answer

I want to be able to fit a surface to a bunch of points that
will be computed probably using a java pgm. IOW a set of points
{x,y,z} need to be fitted to a surface. I would like to be
able to rotate this (like in Maple) and see what the surface
is like.

Simulated Fly-By's
#9
Author: H.M. Hubey

Years ago I saw a video of a simulated fly-by of the California coast.

The data from satellites was used to construct the video of what
someone in a space shuttle or airplane would see if the thing
flew around the coast. The number-crunching was done on a super
computer, and then the data was transferred to video-tape.

Is the pgm available for others to use? IOW, was it done with
NSF money and thus PD?

Do such pgms exist for other computers?

Thank you.

If the surface your trying to fit to your points is a height field
it's a little easier. If however you have a volumetric point cloud
you'll have to get into IsoSurface generation. I have a done height
field fitting from random points and am curently working on creating
IsoSurface classes in J3D. I'd be happy to share what I've learned so
far.

Feel free to e-mail me if you'd like to discuss it in more detail

If you want to spend the time to learn you can do all this with
freeware and public domain geographic data

For the data, do a search USGS geographic data sets
here's a URL for starters:
http://edc.usgs.gov/doc/edchome/ndcdb/ndcdb.html

The data sets are available as grayscale images. Grayscale images can
be converted to height fields with most freeware raytracing software
like POVray and Polyray. I prefer Polyray myself, but POVray is more
widely used and supported.

You could also use the grayscale images to create heightfields in VRML
or Java3D where you have an interactive terrain model (you can move
around in the virtual world)
