Problem running Quake 3 Arena Demo on Radeon 9000 on Windows NT

Hi everybody,

can somebody help me out? I googled a lot but found no solution.

PROBLEM:

I want to run Quake 3 Arena Demo on Windows NT.
I have a Radon 9000 Atlantis made by Sapphire (sapphiretech.com).

MORE INFORMATION:

It seems that the OpenGL driver does not work properly.
Other applications like Moray (www.stmuc.com/moray), when used in OpenGL mode,
don't work too.

Q3A simply displays a black screen. I am able to use the mouse and
hear the intro sound, so the game is functional but simply does not
display anything.

Surprisingly, the OpenGL Screensavers that come with WinNT, work.

Here are some of my installed DLL versions:

ati2mtag.sys 4.3.4034
ati2dvag.dll 4.3.4034
opengl32.dll 4.00 (size is 684 KB, apparently delievered with WinNT 4 Workstation)

Control Panel/Display/ATI Options says
CATALYST Version 02.2
2D Version 4.3.4034
Packaging Version 7.76-020815b-005590C-ATI

HELP REQUEST:

Apparently, this is a OpenGL Driver problem with the ATI Radeon 9000 chip.
Q3A cooperates well (= runs properly) with my hardware on WinXP, Win95, Win98.
Please don't ask me to refrain from using NT - I just want to make Q3A run
on WinNT since it is said to be possible:

Tom's Hardware Guide frequently uses Q3A as performance
test for motherboards and other hardware on WinNT4, e.g.:
http://www.tomshardware.com/mainboard/20000507/kx133-23.html

ID Software claims Q3A runs under WinNT4:
http://216.239.51.100/search?q=cache:n5GkI-GHODkC:www.quake3world.com/community/missionpack-name.html+nt+4.0&ie=UTF-8

www.ntcompatible.com answers "YES" to the question
"Is Q3A compatible with WinNT":
http://www.ntcompatible.com/compat.php?cat=&sort=WindowsNT4&idx=q

Anyone who succeeded in doing that?
Any help is appreciated, thank you.

- Roger

You could try a newer driver - 4.3.4037 is available from ATi
<http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html>
(It may be worth noting that AFAIAA, this is the first NT4/Radeon 9000
driver that ATi have released - I assume the 4034 is a pre-release version
bundled by Sapphire.)

You should also have SP6 installed.

Roger
My suggestion to you is to get a new video card. I have had nothing but
problems that are very similar to yours using the ATI Radeon. I bought
a G-Force 128 meg card and I havent had any problems since then.
Chance

Hi Roger,
I posted to the other group. Try this, it may work, just
rename you opengl32.dll file in the quake dir and then run glquake.exe and
with luck itll work, if not...back to the drawign board. A readeon 9000
should work well.

I now tried driver 4.3.4073 (aka 7.78) for Windows NT,
but the problem persists.
