glut-3.7 install problem

Hi,

I'm trying to get things set up to build ssystem-1.6 on this machine (Sparc
20, dual SM-71's, SunOS 5.6, OpenGL-1.1), and currently I'm stuck at the
point where I need to instal the glut-3.7 libraries, but even though I used
'xmkmf' via the script to creat makefiles, typing 'make install' after the
build is finished does nothing at all.

Does anyone know what libraries have to be installed, and what header files?
I can just as easily copy everything to the right place(s) manually, but I
need to know the 'what' and 'where' parts... 8-)

TIA for any assistance you can provide.

Regards,

Craig.

Hi Rachel,

I installed all the stuff manually following the lead of Sun's OpenGL
packages, and now ssystem-1.6 runs fine, giving me a dismal result of
between 2 and 5 frames per second using the default configuration and
object maps. That's with the on-board SX framebuffer, SunOS 5.6, 200+ meg
of RAM, and a pair of SM-71 CPU's.

I wonder if the Mesa OpenGL libraries would give better performance than
Sun's libraries? Is anyone able to offer a comparison using similar
hardware to what I'm using?

Sigh - if only there was an OpenGL library set for Sun's which took
advantage of all the hardware capabilities of the SX framebuffer in the
Sparc 20's - then the performance would be much better.

I guess I'd need to get a Creator-3D card in an Ultrasparc machine if I
want hardware-accelerated OpenGL applications.. sigh.. Sun's lack of
effort in the graphics arena is catching me out again.. 8-)

I'm sure the SX framebuffer hardware has acceleration features that aren't
used.

Regards,

Craig.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but my impression is that the SX
framebuffer is primarily an accelerated 2D framebuffer, without special 3D
acceleration. Thus, I wouldn't expect it to be effective for OpenGL, which
is primarily a 3D API.

In that case, does anyone know if there actually are any Sbus 24-bit
framebuffers with 3d acceleration that's usable with either Sun's or Mesa's
OpenGL libraries?

I'm presuming there isn't anything that will also work with current SunOS
releases (5.6 or 5.7)..

Regards,

Craig.

I'm pretty sure the Creator3D boards support OpenGL.

Let me just observe that the textured pixel fill performance of these
alleged infinite Reality beating systems is 17 Mpix/sec.

No that's not a typo, I didn't drop a zero or two, it's 17 Mpix/sec, one
seven Mpix/sec. That's without any cool features like multisample
anti-aliasing.

Can anybody say "3D RAM is fas....". Sorry times up!

Oh well, sorry for lighting the blue touch paper.

Cheers,Angus.
