problem with gtk configure script and glib test program under Solaris

Hi,

I've upgraded my system (Sparc 20) to Solaris 8, and I'm now trying to have
a go at building gtk+-1.2.7. I have glib-1.2.7 built and installed, but the
gtk configure script is barfing:

checking for glib-config... /usr/local/bin/glib-config
checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.7... no
*** Could not run GLIB test program, checking why...
*** The test program compiled, but did not run. This usually means
*** that the run-time linker is not finding GLIB or finding the wrong
*** version of GLIB. If it is not finding GLIB, you'll need to set your
*** LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable, or edit /etc/ld.so.conf to point
*** to the installed location Also, make sure you have run ldconfig if that
*** is required on your system
***
*** If you have an old version installed, it is best to remove it, although
*** you may also be able to get things to work by modifying LD_LIBRARY_PATH
***
*** If you have a RedHat 5.0 system, you should remove the GTK package that
*** came with the system with the command
***
*** rpm --erase --nodeps gtk gtk-devel
configure: error:
*** GLIB 1.2.7 or better is required. The latest version of GLIB
*** is always available from ftp://ftp.gtk.org/.

I do not and will not use the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable since the library
search path should be compiled in to any binary using the -R linker option,
not specified using an environment variable which is open to abuse from
other applications.

I seem to remember some people saying the configure script needs to be
changed to pass the -R option to the test program (I presume configure
actually compiles a small C program somehow?), but I know nothing about how
GNU autoconf scripts work, so can somebody point me in the right direction
please? Notice that the configure script also reports that it can't detect
that version 1.2.7 of glib is present, when in fact running 'glib-config
--version' manually reports '1.2.7'.

I definitely have glib-1.2.7 and no other versions installed, in case some
of you are thinking I might have an older version hanging around... My
compiler is gcc-2.95.2 if that makes any difference.

Regards,

Craig.
