LIGHTWAVE IRC CHANNEL FOR INTERACTIVE LIGHTWAVE INFO! With the advent of the Internet and low-cost connections via online services such at Netcom and others providing SLIP/PPP, it is now possible to work interactively with other LightWave users from around the globe! You can interact in REAL TIME with other people who share your interests. You can help them and they can help you almost as if you were right there! How? By using IRC (Internet Relay Chat)! IRC allows one to join different channels (much like CB simulators on various BBS's or chat rooms on AOL or Prodigy) and to type in real time to other users from around the world in the channel. There's no limit to the amount of people you can have in a channel. With programs for the Amiga such as GrapeVine and AmIRC, mIRC and WSIrc for the IBM, IRCII for Unix machines and a SLIP or PPP connection to the Internet, you too can join in on these conversations! Several of us have created the LightWave IRC chat channel and there's always somebody there to help people and to just chat about LightWave and other various topics related to using LightWave. (Sometimes the conversations stray..but that's the fun of it!) Besides the talk about lightwave, IRC allows you to share files with others via something called DCC (Direct Client Connect). While you're chatting with someone about why your model doesn't render correctly, you can send them a render of your scene as well as your model so they can look at them and tell you what you may have done wrong. NOTE: Routinely, updates and patches to LW have been released FIRST on IRC direct from Newtek! THE IRC MONTHLY PANEL DISCUSSIONS Myself and a select few individuals are attempting to start what we hope to be a monthly live interactive conference via IRC (Internet Relay Chat) pertaining to various aspects of LightWave featuring prominent figures in the animation/graphics world. We plan to gather an elite group of professional Lightwave animators as well as recruit professionals in the industry to serve as panelists. These panelists will answer your questions pertaining to various aspects of Lightwave. All questions will be routed through moderators which will pass them on to the panelists. The guest panelists will then answer them in turn. HOW IT WORKS: We will have two IRC channels open called; #LWPanel and #Lightwave. (#lightwave is the normal discussion channel that is available to everyone all the time) The panelist will be in #LWPanel while the public will join both. #LWPanel will be moderated and will allow only the panelist to speak at random while the public will only be able to speak in turn as the moderator see's fit. #Lightwave will not be moderated and will allow the public to chat amongst themselves while awaiting their turn to address the panel. We feel that this will be a great learning experience for all and should be alot of fun. This is just another means of sharing information about LightWave via the Internet. We hope to have you aboard. WHERE WE ARE NOW We're currently in the process of setting up the first few months topics and trying to gather panelists and other professionals to participate in the panel discussions. We are also gathering information from you so that we can make this forum as productive and easy to use as possible. Please answer the appropriate group of questions below (Panelists or Attendee) and submit the answer to either of the two addresses listed at the end of this message. We are planning on starting the discussions in March, so please reply as soon as possible. Even if you don't currently have access to the Internet, we would like to get your feedback. We are looking at ways to provide everyone that is interested with accounts that will allow them to IRC, so please respond. SOME QUESTIONS FOR PROSPECTIVE PANELISTS If you are interested in becoming a panelist, please reply with the following information so that we can determine a date and time that best suits everyones schedule. 1) Generally, what day of the week would you be available for one to two hours starting at 10:00 PM EST? Note: We feel that this time would be the best compromise for the east and west coast people in the USA. We may change this based on responses to this questionair. 2) Please give one other day and time. 3) If there are any particluar dates that would be best for you between now and the end of March, please list. 4) Please list projects and or accomplishments. We will compile a list of these for each panelist which will be echoed to the public before the conference begins. 5) If you have ANY questions concerning IRC or this project, list them here. 6) Do you know of any other professional animators that might be interested in being a guest panelist? If so, how can we contact them? SOME QUESTIONS FOR ATTENDEES So that we can best serve your needs, please answer the following questions in as much detail as possible. 1) Do you have access to the Internet now and if not, do you plan on obtaining access in the near future? 2) Would you be interested in attending such IRC discussions and do you feel this is a worth-while project? 3) What topics would you like to see covered in panel discussions on IRC? 4) What would be the best time for you to attend such discussions? 5) Do you need help in getting an Internet connection and an IRC program so that you can attend the monthly discussions? 6) Who would you like to see as guest panelists? We will be contacting all participants within the next few weeks with a confirmation of scheduling. Thanks for your time and hope to see ya soon on IRC! bobl@graphics.rent.com (Bob Lindabury) IRC Nickname: TheRaven rnorwood@teleplex.net (Ronnie Norwood) IRC Nickname: RonDude -- -- Bob Lindabury The NEW Graphics BBS 908/469-0049 "It's better than a sharp stick in the eye!" The irc is a chat line and nothing more; as a net surfer and lightwave artist I recommend Lightwave users find real info sources and not let the irc suck away their time with no real benefit. The irc is a good way to kill time if you are bored and lonely; nothing more. I say this as someone who's spent way too much of the last three years. The lightwave channel is pretty bad as irc channels go anyway, so there's even more reason not to go there. -- wavegirl Support Amiga development, *BUY* amiga software!
