PM 6.5 Plus (Mac) and exporting to PDF

For the first time today, I tried using Adobe PageMaker 6.5 Plus (for Mac)
to export a file to PDF format. I wanted to do this so I could share the
final product with a variety of computer users via Acrobat Reader.

When I went to use the Export command, I received a warning message:

"Exporting to a PDF file requires a Postscript printer driver. Please
install one."

(1: Will Apple's LaserWriter 8 driver solves this? I currently use an HP
DeskJet 870cse, and have all of my non-DeskJet drivers turned off. Is there
some INIT I should re-activiate?

(2: I remember installing PPD's when I installed PageMaker Plus. I also
remember installing a Postscript driver of some kind when I installed Adobe
Type Manager 4.5 Deluxe. Is there something here I should go back and
re-install?

(3: Is there any third-party Postscript emulation (StyleScript?) I should
buy to better facilitate this in the future?

not sitting in front of your machine, I can't say for sure, but is something to
check,
    1. when you installed pagemaker, did you install acrobat distiller?
    2. in setting up the PPD, go to the adobe folder and select the acrobat
distiller PPD from the printer set up

hope this helps

==============================================

  ** UPDATE **

I reactivated my LaserWriter 8 driver. No change. Then I selected the
PSPrinter icon in the Chooser. Everything changed! Acrobat Distiller started
right up from PageMaker's Export->PDF command. It is as if PageMaker is
printing to a file instead of a Postscript printer.

The only drawback: the rendering wasn't perfect. I used the character
expansion feature in Microsoft Word 98 (prior to importing to PageMaker via
Paste Special) to spread an address out over a letterhead-like design. The
character spacing is mixed up on one line now. The Distiller log indicates
a font-substitution issue: could not handle Helvetica Narrow. Looks like I
have alot to learn... :-)

When it comes to pdf we all do (or at least a lot of us do). If I make 4
pdf files of the same document 3 of them will act/be slightly different.
Sometimes when a pdf won't print correctly I click OK in the gotcha box
and the file flips upside down. I go back and make another pdf, the
exact same way, and the thing prints out perfect. This happens a lot.
What tha . . . .

I always find there is better control over the pdf creation if I create the
postscript file first (selecting the Acrobat Distiller PPD in the print
dailog box) making sure that in Options the fonts are selected to download.
Open your Acrobat Distiller and drag the completed postscript file onto it
and voila, you should have a nicely turned out pdf file. I do this with my
normal Laserwriter selected in the Chooser.

If you are unsure about creating a postscript file, post again.

I found some hassles with using the pdf writer or using the export option on
the file menu. Postscripting first gives a higher level of control, from any
application.
