Damaged Mac PM6 Files

I recently received some Mac PageMaker 6 files that have me stumped.

The symptoms: virtually any action seems to instigate a "recomposing of
stories" alert box. Also, the word count plug-in fails. Something is
wrong, since PageMaker seems to think there are too many stories.

Environment:
PowerTower 180e 32MB 7.6.1
Power Center 150 32MB 7.6.1
PowerMac 7100/66 32MB 7.5.5
all with PageMaker 6 or 6.5. Same Results for all.

In response I:
Deleted all but the first page of a file.
Deleted all objects on the page (through select all).
Deleted all objects on the master page (through select all).
Deleted all paragraph styles.
Did a "Save As" to create a new file, and delete all "Mini-Saves"

Result:
File still seems to have close to 200 stories.
File size is 350K instead of 27k, the size of an wmpty file.

Obviously these PageMaker files are hiding something. Anyone have an idea
of how to clean them up. And of course, when I asked the client if they
had any idea what was wrong, the client responded with the usual "Isn't it
suppossed to be that way?"

Please help,
David Minton
