I get a Bad Index Error Message in Pagemaker 6 and the computer crashes all when I use this particular document. Is there anyway to redeem it? If anyone has had any experience with this kind of problem, please email me at <pcgraph@powerup.com.au>

First, if you're using Windows, make the PM window as small as possible when you go to open the file. This reduces the chance of it being something drawn onscreen that's killing you. (Mac folks, our options are more limited... I suppose switching to 640x480 resolution wouldn't hurt...) If you can open it without it crashing, try saving as a v5 document under a new name. Then try converting the v5 file back to v6. If that doesn't work, upgrade and try opening the v6 file in v6.5. -- Dave Brown To send email, remove ".spamx" from return address d a v e b @ p r o a x i s . c o m

There are two ways I have used to correct this problem: First: (easiest, but also not 100% effective) Open a COPY of the file. In the open dialog box, select copy -- not original. Save the opened file with a new name / delete the old file. Close PM and reopen the new file with original checked. Second: (pain in the ----, but 100% successful) Open the original and a new document in PM. In the original document go to pasteboard view. Place all text on the pasteboard. It is ok if text overlaps. If there is too much text to place on a single page, make sure you have at least the first and last parts showing and use the window shades to roll up the rest (but all text must first be placed on page -- ). Generally, for graphics, I manually place them again after doing this as I am sure the program would crash. Note: I have done books up to 60 pages (8.5 x 11) without major problems . . but I am sure there are limitations. Arrange both windows so they are side by side. Select all on the original document and 'drag' to the new window. When everything transfers the fun starts . . . Close the original and re-layout the new document. -- To reply: replace the 'x' with a 't'.
