Subject: PROLOG and Graphics

I am presently beginning doctoral research regarding the use of
PROLOG for computer animation. What I would appreciate are any
references you might have concerning the use of PROLOG (any version)
to create computer graphics in general. I am specifically interested
in PROLOG, but article relating to LISP or AI would also be
of help.
Thanks!

Subject: Graphics Package Wanted

I am looking for graphics packages that may be used on a Sun for representing
finite state machines. If you have, or know of someone who might have,
developed software to graphically display finite state automata,
please send me mail at

If you know of any publications that have information about graphically
displaying finite state machines, please send me mail about them.

Thanks.

Subject: 32 bit frame buffer survey

[Submitted by David@SUN.com]

When using a 32 bit per pixel in a frame buffer, how do you organize it ??

Assuming 8 bits each of red, green, blue, alpha (0 in a 24 bit buffer),
should red be in the least significant bits?

should blue?
should alpha?
should green?

Cast your vote for RGBA, ABGR, ARGB, or another combination (where Z
represents the least significant bits of WXYZ). Also, of course include
your reasoning.

Also please send info about how any commercial hardware or software keep data.

Maybe we can develop some consensus to help everyone tired of shuffling
bytes. A summary will be posted to the net.

Thanks.

"Careers for the Digital Artist" is a Bay Area ACM/SIGGRAPH meeting.
The panel speakers will focus on computer graphic art careers and
educational opportunities in the Bay Area. Areas of particular
emphasis will include the broadcast/entertainment fields and desktop
publishing. It will be held Sept. 22, 7:30 pm at the San Francisco
Art Institute auditorium located at 800 Chestnut Street. Admission
free. Come early, seating is limited. For more info, call (415)

I need to know if there are any packages (PC oriented)
that enable a user to enter timing diagrams (instead of
sketching them on a graph paper) and thenany modification
in one timing diagram will influence the edges and the transitions
in all the other timing diagrams (sort of a graphics editor ).

I really appreciate if anyone has any information on something like that
please reply to me personally,
thanks in advance

I'm interested in the automatic (and good-looking!) display of the
structure of directed graphs (and trees). Has anyone got any experience
or algorithms they'd be willing to share?

Many thanks,

Does anyone know where the films by James F. Blinn, "The Mechanical Universe"
can be purchased or rented. I am in the Toledo area, and need some films
for a High school physics class.

Did anyone design specialized hardware for manipulating windows?. I've got an
article from S. Ilgen & D. Scherson describing such a chip which processes
virtual window management.

Is anyone familiar with converting 24 bit rgb images to 8 bit
images so that they can be displayed on a 8 bit color frame buffer?

I'am sure there are good algorithms out there, since people like
Apple show them off in the Mac II advertisements.

Literature references or source code (shareware or payware)
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

[Manually forwarded by the moderator:]

I would like to [ask] a question about SunGKS. We have version 2.0
and there seems to be problems in doing rubber-band locator input on the
Sun. I was wondering if anyone else out there has noticed the adverse
effect that we get when we try it....I.e. the System gets a bus error
and reboots. Obviously a bug...I guess. Can anyone out there tell me
how to get rubber-band locator input using SunGKS? (What is the correct
FORTRAN data record for packing...)

Thanks...

Please forgive my ignorance but I do not know how to get to
this machine to dload. Could you mail these files to me at

Re: HOPGL Graphics Snaring

One solution --- use a print spooler with a big buffer. Input to
the buffer from the serial port that the HPGL device is "supposed"
to be attached to. When the graphics output is done, read from the
spooler via the same or another serial port into a file. Or buy a
second PC and feed its serial port directly, hopefully with X-ON/X-OFF
flow control so nothing is lost when the second PC has to go dump its
buffer to disk.
