SILICON GRAPHICS ADDS FIVE NEW COMPANIES
TO IRIS EXPLORER LICENSING PROGRAM
New Agreements to Make IRIS Explorer Available on All Major Workstation
Platforms, More Supercomputers
MOUNTAIN VIEW, California (July 28, 1992) -- Silicon Graphics, Inc.
(NYSE: SGI) today announced licensing agreements with five hardware and
software vendors that will allow its IRIS Explorer(tm) visual
application builder to operate on eight additional computer platforms,
including UNIX(tm) workstations and supercomputers. The announcement
brings the number of heterogeneous platforms on which IRIS Explorer is
available to 10.
The new agreements will allow the IRIS Explorer application programming
interface to operate on workstations from Sun Microsystems Inc., Digital
Equipment Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co., International Business Machines
Corp. and Control Data Systems Inc. The product also will be available
to users of supercomputers from Intel Corp. and Kendall Square Research
Corp. Since its release one year ago, IRIS Explorer has become the
industry's fastest-growing applications builder for scientific and
technical environments, with the largest installed base of any
commercially available package of its kind. The package is shipping on
systems from Silicon Graphics and Cray Research Inc.
The five new licensees are Control Data Systems, Du Pont Pixel, Kendall
Square Technology, Intel Corp. and Numerical Algorithms Group Ltd.
(NAG). Du Pont Pixel will provide the IRIS Explorer application, in
conjunction with its PX/IRIS GL(tm) to users of Sun SPARC(tm)-based
workstations. In addition, the licensing agreement with NAG opens the
IRIS Explorer software to HP, DEC, IBM and Sun. Control Data will also
supply the application to users of its RISC-based systems.
The agreements also have expanded the availability of the IRIS Explorer
software among supercomputer users. A licensing agreement with Intel
will bring the IRIS Explorer application to users of Intel's Paragon
supercomputer systems. Kendall Square Research also will supply its
customers with the software package.
"The addition of five major partners to the rapidly growing list of
licensees of the IRIS Explorer application underscores this product's
recognized value to scientific and technical users," said Craig Upson,
director of end-user tools engineering at Silicon Graphics. "The
availability of the IRIS Explorer software on so many leading platforms,
combined with our large user base operating on Silicon Graphics systems,
means that we will see a dramatic increase in users of the IRIS Explorer
software and in modules written for IRIS Explorer."
With IRIS Explorer, users and software developers can build
sophisticated applications for visualizing complex scientific and
engineering problems with simple point-and-click selections. Without
writing any code, computational scientists and engineers with unique
visualization requirements can integrate their existing data sets and
algorithms for fast, custom viewing and analysis.
As one of Silicon Graphics' key enabling software products, IRIS
Explorer is aimed at making the company's industry-leading visualization
technology more accessible to the broad range of workstation users. By
making IRIS Explorer available on other platforms, Silicon Graphics
enables programmers to streamline development efforts, and allows users
in distributed environments to most efficiently exploit their networked
resources. Silicon Graphics also will begin distributing 150 additional
IRIS Explorer modules on compact disc to users of the application
builder software. The latest IRIS Explorer licensing agreements are
part of Silicon Graphics' overall strategy to open its industry-leading
graphics software technology to all computer users. By licensing IRIS
Explorer along with its OpenGL programming interface and IRIS
Inventor(tm) 3D graphics toolkit, Silicon Graphics is providing
state-of-the-art computer graphics technology to a broader class of
customers. OpenGL has been licensed by 20 computing and software
companies, including IBM, Digital Equipment Corp., Microsoft Corp.,
Intel and Du Pont Pixel. Silicon Graphics has also licensed IRIS
Inventor to Digital Equipment Corp. Silicon Graphics, Inc. is the
leading manufacturer of visual computing systems. The company delivers
three-dimensional graphics, color, audio, video and real-time
technologies to the technical, scientific and creative computing
marketplace. Silicon Graphics, Inc. has offices worldwide and
headquarters in Mountain View, California.
Silicon Graphics, IRIS and the Silicon Graphics logo are registered
trademarks, and IRIS Inventor, IRIS Explorer, IRIS GL and OpenGL are
trademarks, of Silicon Graphics, Inc. UNIX is a registered trademark of
UNIX Systems Laboratories, Inc. SPARC is a trademark of Sun
Microsystems, Inc.
