This is a symptom of not having XUSERFILESEARCHPATH defined or
missing files /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/sgi-color{1280,1024}/Explorer

Try
	setenv XUSERFILESEARCHPATH `/usr/bin/X11/appdefpath`

All of the X attributes that would change based on screen size are put
in the lower level app-default. This includes fonts and geometry.

Be aware that the appdefpath command requires DISPLAY to be set.
