"-g" compiler option in mbuilder

I was wondering about module performance and the "-g" compiler option.
The mbuilder compiles everything with cc -g, which puts in debugging
info. Is this necessary?

Doesn't the -g option tend to inhibit compiler optimization as well?
I suppose it's easy enough for the user to edit the Makefile and take
it out of the CFLAGS or something.
