JPE and JPG. Is there any difference?

G'day,

Is there any difference between a JPE and a JPG file? I realise that
they are both JPEG files and I am not aware of any differences. A
computer novice put this question to me to day and I could not find any
definitive information on the web stating why these two different
suffixes exist.

Any references to a documented explanation would be appreciated. Thank
you for your help.

Regards,

Luke Maslen.

I think it has something to do with a "super duper jpeg" file saving
filter for photoshop. I know this filter save jpegs with the jpe
extension. I can't remember the name of the filter though.

Maybe it's Windows not coping with a four letter file extension...

They are both incorrect. The file is a JPEG.

They are almost certainly the same file. '.JPG' has become the definitive
standard over '.JPEG' - '.JPE' is simply a a shortened version of '.JPEG'.

All JPEG files should have the extension '.JPG'. That's the standard.

Cheers,

-Rob

Can you direct me to the appropriate standards document, please?

I meant that it was the 'accepted' standard. ie. if you pick 1000 sites at
random, you would be hard pressed to find a JPEG image with and extension
other than '.JPG'.

For a scientifically, totally, 100% random sample of all the internet's
images use this secret incantation:

   http://images.google.com/images?q=.jpeg

Lo and behold, they're ALL ".jpeg"!

The search based on that string is looking for images with .JPEG in the file
name. What does that prove? Sure there are some images out there with that
extension. I never disputed that. However, the fact remains that most JPEG
images these days have a .JPG extension.

Go through your bookmarks and look at each page. How many have JPEG files
with the extension '.JPE'??? Not many.

See ya!

Hi Rob,

You are spot on. It turns out that some Windows programs now support 4
letter suffixes such as ".jpeg" and that this ability has existed since
Windows 95. If such a file is then opened into another Windows program
that only supports the older 3 letter suffix standard, the suffix
becomes truncated and just leaves ".jpe". This can even happen when just
attaching a file named "rob.jpeg" to MS Outlook Express which seems to
truncate the suffix to 3 letters.

So JPG and JPE are exactly the same files but the suffix really should
be either JPG or JPEG. One can regard the JPE as a filename fragment.
Similarly, HTML files can become HTM files and there must be many other
examples.

Whilst I have not uncovered any "official" information on this topic, I
have now found numerous newsgroup postings which provide step by step
instructions to replicate this scenario. So the cause of the scenario
is how applications handle 4 letter suffixes.

Thank you to everyone who has responded to my posting.

Regards,

Luke Maslen.
