PEOPLE IN CONTROL
An international conference on human interfaces in
control rooms, cockpits and command centres
UMIST, Manchester, UK: 18 - 21 June 2001
**DEADLINE FOR SYNOPSES**
**NOW EXTENDED TO 20 NOVEMBER 2000**

INTRODUCTION

This, the second 'People in Control' conference aims to attract
industrialists and academics with an interest in how people control complex
systems - and in the tools that support them.

These people may be working in control rooms for chemical plants, power
stations or railways, in aircraft cockpits or ships, or in emergency or
defence command centres. A key aim of the conference is to bring together
practitioners from different application areas so that they can learn from
each other's experiences.

The conference will have a broad technical scope and include:

case studies from the energy, chemical, aerospace or transport industries
developments of new display and control equipment
presentations of research results in ergonomics, psychology and control room
design
At the 'People in Control' conference in 1999, 70% of the delegates were
from industry. They included engineers, operators and managers as well as
psychologists and ergonomists. 20% were from regulatory bodies, government
bodies and research agencies. 10% were academics. Delegates represented many
different industries and application areas. Their common interest was in the
way people and technology interact in a working environment.

It is planned to hold a Younger Engineer's Workshop on Monday 18 June 2001
followed by the 3 day conference on 19-21 June. Poster sessions, debates, an
exhibition and visits to control centres are also planned.

The conference scope, details on contributions and deadlines, prizes, the
venue, registration and further information are on the website.
