"WHAT DOES ENVIRONMENT-BEHAVIOR RESEARCH AND PRACTICE
HAVE TO DO WITH BUSINESS PROCESS IMPROVEMENT?"

An Intensive Full Day Workshop of the Environmental Design
Research Association (EDRA) Conference, Omni Parker House Hotel,
Boston, MA, USA. March 1, 1995
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Business process improvement convers various methodologies for
improving or re-engineering organization processes, workflows and
structures where autonomous work teams are a key factor. What is the
role of physical environments in these restructuring efforts? BPI
literature usually ignores it. Is the 50-75% restructuring failure
rate due to not utilizing all system elements -- people, organziation,
    built enviornment, technology?

This full-day Intensive Session includes Boston area BPI professionals
invited to join Environment-Behavior researchers and practitioners in a
provocative cross-discipline exploration of expertise and approaches.
Brief 15 minute presentations from both groups will allow maximum
interim informal discussion time for all audience participants.

    The Intensive will ask:
    - How do work environments support or interfere with these new business
       restructurings?
    - What constraints do managements impose on BPI processes which might
       exclude work environment consideration?
    - How can EDRA researchers and preactitioners impact the BPI methods so
that work environment variables are better evaluated and utilized?
    - Is more research needed?
    - How might such research be used?
    - Are BPI-EDRA collaborations possible?

    We will hear about:

Kent Sprecklemeyer, Department of Architecture, University of Kansas

"What Can Happen When the WOrk Environment Doesn't Support the Work
    Design?"
       Susan Cooper, CUNY

    "Realizing the Target Environment"
Scott Siderman, BPI Committee of the ASQC

"Integrating Work Environment and Organizational Change"
