Seminar anouncement
AI, Autonomous User Agents and CSCW
10.00 a.m., Tuesday, 30 June, 1992
Department of Trade & Industry
Kingsgate House
66-74 Victoria Street
London SW1
AI is playing an increasingly important role in HCI; witness, for example, the sessions on this subject at HCI'91, and the recent ACM book on Intelligent Interfaces. So far, however, in the CSCW literature, only scant attention has been paid to the use o>f AI techniques.
Consequently, the CSCW-SIG (the Special Interest Group on Computer Supported Cooperative Working supported by the U.K. Department of Trade and Industry) is organising a one-day workshop whose purpose is to highlight the above topic.
The scope for discussion is wide and varied, given the current background in HCI. It has been said by Alan Kay that user interfaces of the 1990s will not be tool-based as in the 1980s, but will instead be agent-based. How intelligent will these agents >be? How will they be displayed? How will they support group working?
If you are interested in these or other questions concerning the relationship between AI and CSCW, you are likely to enjoy this workshop. Presentations will be given on a variety of germane topics, and time will also be allocated for general discussion.
Note: For security reasons the DTI stipulates that attendance is by prior registration only. Please complete and return a registration form or contact:

The CSCW-SIG was formed by the UK Human Interface (HI) and Communications and Distributed Systems (CDS) Clubs in 1990 as a special interest group supported by, but separate from the UK Dept. of Trade and Industry. Membership is open to anyone interested i>n CSCW. The current membership is several hundred people, divided equally between commerce/industry and academia. Anyone wishing to join the SIG or be on its mailing list should contact: S.A.Scrivener@ lut.ac.uk

The CSCW-SIG has opted for variety in its programme of meetings so as to air as many different topics as possible and to emphasise the multi-disciplinary nature of CSCW. The SIG has negotiated a CSCW book series and it is the intention that one source of> material for this series will come from the meetings programme. The general editor is Dr Dan Diaper, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Liverpool, who may be contacted in this connection:
