Design Issues in CSCW
10.00 a.m., Tuesday, 17 March, 1992

Department of Trade & Industry
151 Buckingham Palace Road
London SW1

"If you want to design a system to be used by people, start off by examining
the way they work and tailor the system to their needs."

This basic design principle is particularly relevant to the concerns of
the CSCW community, including researchers, system developers and, last but
not least, USERS.

The goal of bringing a user perspective to the core of systems analysis and design
has undoubtedly influenced the development of new methods, tools and techniques
to be used in design practice. But this is not all: the development of CSCW
applications has also stimulated a search for a new orientation in such practice,
based on the view that the role of computer systems in real application areas
is more than that of a tool to provide solutions to a limited class of problems.
The proper role of a computer system in such applications is to support user
activities - which are intrinsically collaborative in nature. Thus CSCW design
addresses real problems of technology in application and therefore requires
re-conceptualization not only of the known design issues, but also of the
associated methods, tools and techniques.

How and why is design in the context of CSCW different from the established theories
and practices? This workshop brings together participants from research and
development, industrial and commercial organisations, as well as academic
institutions. They will present their work in developing CSCW applications,
discuss their views and argue their case.

The variety and the interdisciplinary nature of their contributions will provide
a framework for the consideration of design issues in CSCW.

The CSCW-SIG was formed by the UK Human Interface (HI) and Communications and
Distributed Systems (CDS) Clubs in 1990 as a special interest group supported by,
but separate from the UK Dept. of Trade and Industry. Membership is open to
anyone interested in CSCW. The current membership is several hundred people,
divided equally between commerce/industry and academia. Anyone wishing to join
the SIG or be on its mailing list should contact: S.A.Scrivener@ lut.ac.uk

The SIG has opted for variety in its programme of meetings so as to air as many
different topics as possible and to emphasise the multi-disciplinary nature of CSCW.
It is the intention of the SIG to have seminar papers published either as a
book series or in a journal special issue, e.g. Interacting with Computers.

Tuesday, 30 June 1992 - 'AI, Autonomous User Agents and CSCW'
Organised by Prof Ernest Edmonds and John Connolly at LUTCHI Research Centre,
Loughborough, (e-mail): E.A.Edmonds@ lut.ac.uk or J.H.Connolly@lut.ac.uk

The DTI CSCW-SIG is committed to a policy of open membership and the representation
of the widest possible range of members' views on CSCW. Anyone interested in
speaking at any of the above meetings should contact the organisers direct or
Colston Sanger of GID on 0428 654821 or (e-mail): colston@ gid.co.uk.

Proposals for other CSCW meeting topics will also be gratefully received.

The SIG is in the process of establishing a CSCW book series and it is the
intention that one source of material for this series will come from the
meetings programme.
