Topic:      Context in User Interfaces

                          About the Talk
                          ==============

Interaction with a computer system involves the issuing of commands,
either as a sequence of point-and-click operations in window-oriented
interfaces or as lines of text in traditional (command-line)
interfaces. Decisions that users make are based on their understanding
of the current state or context and of some desired goal. How do users
know what the context is? What happens when they lose that
information? Knowledge of the context is fundamental to the ease of
use as well as to the comfort and satisfaction level in working with a
particular system. In window-oriented interfaces the context is
directly visible as the state of the window system, while in
command-line interfaces the knowledge is derived by deduction -- by
observing the history of previously issued commands. This
presentation will discuss the role context plays in user interfaces,
how it is presented to the user. The talk will illustrate with
examples some of the ways context is treated in commercial software.

                    Ottawa ACM/SIGCHI Scholarship
                    =============================

The Ottawa ACM/SIGCHI now has a scholarship in place, valued
at $75 (cost of text books for HCI course). Nominations for
the Ottawa ACM/SIGCHI Scholarship are always welcome (contact
Peter Szmyt). The nominee must be a student with a strong
interest in HCI, and intends on pursuing further studies
and/or a career in HCI. Original HCI work and/or special
projects are given high consideration. The student must be a
speaker at a monthly Ottawa ACM/SIGCHI meeting.

                           January Meeting
                           ===============

Topic:    Prototyping Tools

Speakers: We're looking for people who have used prototyping tools for
          design purposes.

          "But I'm not a public speaker!" Don't worry, you won't be
          alone. Others will be sharing their experiences.

          "But I don't have anything intelligent to say!" Of course you
          do. You have used the tool and many others have not. You
          have the knowledge of experience.

          "But I don't know what to say!" Some of the questions you
          could answer include:
              What did you want to accomplish with the tool?
              How long did it take you to do it?
              What comprimises did you make?
              How satisfied were you with the end result?

          "But I don't have the time to prepare!" Don't worry, the
          intent is to have an informal sharing of experiences.

          As an added bonus, students can qualify for the Ottawa SIGCHI
          scholarship.

          If you have used a prototyping tool, please let someone on the
          executive know your name, the tool you used and how much time
          you'll need to talk about your experience.
