                              About the Talk
                              ==============

Come and learn the real secret of "user friendly" through an
exploration of the rhetorical power of the user interface.

This presentation focuses on the design of visuals in order to
discover the ways in which form carries meaning and influences
user responses. We will "learn to see" by bringing to the level
of consciousness some of the ways in which we automatically decode
visual messages. Using various elements of speech act theory,
graphic design theory, and rhetorical theory, we can draw some
implications for system design as well as user interface design
and solve the riddle of "user friendly."

Mary Margaret Couse is currently in the final year towards
an MA in Language and Professional Writing from the University
of Waterloo, with a concentration in the area of user interface
design. Her work has involved research in visual literacy,
graphic design, and system theory. Ms Couse recently transferred
to Northern Telecom after five years with Bell-Northern Research.
