Ottawa ACM/SIGCHI February Meeting
==================================
Date: Thursday, February 16, 1995
Time: 19:00 - 21:00
Place: BNR Skyline (Formerly "Meriline", Merivale & Baseline)
Tower 5 (west side of complex)
1st Floor, Rose Room
Building faces Baseline Rd. on north side
Speaker: Sonia D. Bot, Bell-Northern Research Ltd.
Topic: System Models in the Real World for Real People
About the Talk
==============
As users of high technology products become ubiquitous and more
demanding, the need for a product's profound simplicity, self evidence,
and conspicuous value become critical factors in its acceptance and
success. With the increase in degrees of freedom available to designing
such products, lack of proper planning and judgement can lead many
designers down the road to more unsatisfied users and unusable systems.
Solid system models reduce such risks. Solid system models focus on the
real people using the products.
In her talk, Sonia will be presenting the building blocks for developing
and integrating such system models. She will be focussing on typical
real life examples found in software products. She will further this by
taking a holistic approach in exploring the cross-correlation and use of
models from other disciplines such as medicine, art, sports, and
recreation.

new and future products in the telecommunications arena. Prior to BNR,
she worked for TransCanada PipeLines, IBM, and the University of
Toronto.
Sonia has a BMath in Computer Science with Systems Design Engineering
from the University of Waterloo, and a MASc in Biomedical Engineering
from the University of Toronto. Sonia is the co-founder, past
president, and current technical advisor of the Ottawa ACM/SIGCHI.
