WHAT?

The state of HCI in Ottawa: How do we meet the need?
A Panel Discussion.

Given that companies worldwide are struggling to find skilled and
experienced HCI people, the panel members will discuss the issue as it
relates to their own companies and the community of Ottawa. Expect to hear
about the career opportunities in HCI in each of these organizations, the
skills employers are looking for, and their views on how people can get
these skills.

After listening to each panel member talk about the situation in their own
company, come prepared to ask questions, to share your insights and to make
suggestions that will help us build a strong HCI community in
Ottawa.

"Visualisation Techniques for Large 2D information Spaces"

Abstract:
The advent of advanced high-speed communications networks has enabled
computer users to access voluminous amount of information via a relatively
small display screen. Effective visualisation techniques are therefore
crucial in improving the information transfer between the computer and the
user. The seminar examines various information visualisation techniques that
can be applied to improve the effective presentation of information by
providing global context and local details concurrently. It then provides a
selection strategy for these techniques, based on the nature of the data to
be presented.

Biographical information:
Dr Ying Leung is currently Deputy Head, School of Information Technology at
Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia. Dr Leung has a broad
background including Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics
and Business Administration. He has been actively involved in a variety of
research projects in Human Computer Interaction (HCI), with funding support
through government research grants and from commercial organisations in the
IT industry. His major research works in HCI include distortion-oriented
displays, 2D and 3D displays and auditory interface, which have been
published in various HCI journals and international conferences. He also has
a strong interest in cross-cultural issues in human computer interaction. Dr
Leung has been very active in promoting HCI in the Australasian region. In
1994, he was the technical chair of the 4th Australian Computer Human
Interaction Conference. He was one of the major proponents of the creation
of a conference in the Asia Pacific region to promote the HCI discipline. In
1996, the First Asia Pacific Conference on Computer Human Interaction was
held in Singapore, where he served as Technical co-chair.

ABSTRACT
--------

Computing and communications technologies are increasingly part of
everyday life - at home, in the workplace, inside the car, in your
pocket. Wherever you are and whatever you are doing. Turning these
technologies into products and services that are easy to use as well
as meeting people's needs and values are key factors in facilitating
their acceptance in a mass market. The success of the world-wide-web
has highlighted the importance of providing ease-of-use, enjoyment
and value for the user in a marketplace with many rival competitors.
Users expect devices that are easy to use, that fulfill a need and
that deliver a compelling experience.

This research TechTalk workshop examines the range of issues surrounding
the design of usable, accessible and desirable systems from the user's
perspective. Special topics that will be addressed are:

* Key questions about home interaction devices -
TV, computers, games platforms - and about the human and
social issues of the broadband home

* Design issues for new consumer wireless communications devices

* Design issues affecting successful services for the World Wide Web
