Hi,

I graduated in May from Idaho State University. During my Junior year, I
interned with Microsoft Corp in Seattle.

About internships:

I consider it a must. Find a bigname company if at all possible, Novell,
Microsoft, Lotus, WordPerfect, IBM, HP, DEC, etc... The bigger the company,
the more internships, and the more seriously you will be considered for
employment when you graduate...

A lot of companies have summer internships, but some require a semester
or more, (Microsoft is 9-months.) Additionally, the federal government
has internships as well, with it's various branches, (if you can stomach
working for the IRS, CIA, FBI, etc...)

When to Intern:

As near as I could figure, most like to have you intern sometime in your
junior or senior year. I'd recommend junior year if at all possible, as
this gives you an opportunity to change your major if you find that a
specific job is not for you. I found that the 'real world' was nothing
like the 'ivory tower' and consequently decided to stay in my major instead
of changing disciplines. I can thank my internship with MS for that.

What you will learn:

Office Politics, Long hours, and most importantly, the exciting technical
things they gloss over in class, since they tend to think that theory
is more important than current technical developments.

What to do with it:

Flaunt it when you go to interview. I believe the reason I am working here
at Hewlett-Packard is because of the fact that I had interned, and had
good grades, where most of my peers at school had no practical experience.
