In my preliminary / investigation I have to use a (prototype) text-retrieval system with a / thesaurus. Does anyone know (or has experience with) a (prototype) / text-retrieval system that uses a thesaurus (in Public domain or as / commercial software). I'm looking at using such a system as a turbo booster for existing information services - there is a short discussion document which is available by gopher at the following address: Name=CFD-5 Type=0 Port=5000 Path=0/number/CFD-5 Host=hill.lut.ac.uk Abstract: "Most on-line information systems today offer some searching capabil- ity, but this tends to be very primitive - for example, the leading-edge Wide Area Information Server (WAIS) system developed by Thinking Machines [Kah91] is based on a simple keyword search. This paper introduces some methods which may be used in providing a more powerful search technique based on the automatic identification of concepts equivalent to those requested by the user. One method which may be of particular interest allows conceptual searches to be carried out using almost any existing information system as a back-end." You might also be interested in the GENIE project, which aims to provide a support service for research into environmental change in a distributed systems environment - see Name=Genie_Documentation Type=1 Port=70 Path=1/Projects/Genie_Documentation Host=hill.lut.ac.uk "Global Environmental Change is one of the major issues facing the future of humanity. We know that the climate is changing and that the atmosphere is becoming more polluted, we know that forests are being destroyed and that soils are deteriorating while the need for food increases as populations continue to grow. We suspect that most of this change is being caused by human activity, though some may be due to long term processes over which we have little control. The key issue is to find out how human activity is causing environmental change and the impact of that environmental change on peoples and societies." I would be very interested in getting feedback on the ideas described in my paper - please e-mail any comments to: M.T.Hamilton@lut.ac.uk.
